Denver International Airport, the A Line, Union Station, I-25, I-70, Amtrak, transit, and selective car use

Getting to Denver and around the city

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) A Line connects Denver International Airport (DEN) with Union Station. Walk within central neighborhoods, use transit or rideshare between districts, and save a car for Red Rocks or a trip beyond Denver.

Denver International Airport, Union Station, I-25, I-70, Red Rocks, Boulder, and the Front Range

Denver sits where the high plains meet the Front Range, with airport rail reaching Union Station and major highways spreading toward city neighborhoods, Red Rocks, and the mountains.

Compare Denver International Airport, Union Station, central hotel districts, Red Rocks, Boulder, and the I-25 and I-70 corridors before deciding whether rail, transit, rideshare, or a rental car belongs in the trip. Map lines show planning corridors rather than turn-by-turn directions; check current flight, transit, road, weather, parking, and event information before departure.

  • Snow, strong wind, construction, crashes, rush hours, games, concerts, and weekend mountain traffic can change a short-looking transfer. City weather does not establish conditions on I-70 west of Denver.

Choose the first transfer before takeoff

Union Station is the simplest city arrival

The airport sits well beyond the central neighborhoods on Peña Boulevard. For a Lower Downtown (LoDo), central Denver, or Union Station hotel, the A Line avoids a long road transfer and delivers travelers beside restaurants, hotels, regional buses, local transit, and Amtrak. A rideshare or rental car becomes more attractive for Cherry Creek, outer neighborhoods, family gear, or a late arrival after rail service thins.

Denver International Airport and the A Line

Denver International Airport (DEN) lies far northeast of central Denver. The Regional Transportation District (RTD) A Line connects the airport station with Denver Union Station; check the current timetable, fare, service alerts, and late-arrival options before flying.

I-25 and I-70

I-25 carries north-south Front Range traffic, while I-70 crosses the metro and continues west toward the foothills. Rush hours, snow, crashes, construction, and weekend mountain traffic can transform both corridors.

Amtrak at Union Station

Long-distance trains arrive in Lower Downtown (LoDo), close to hotels, restaurants, and local transit. Train timing can shift, so keep the first reservation flexible and confirm baggage and station details.

A selective rental car

Central districts rarely need a car every hour. Rent one when Red Rocks, outer neighborhoods, or a Colorado extension demands it, then compare hotel parking costs with the freedom it actually adds.

Moving through Denver

Walk within each neighborhood; ride between them

LoDo, central Denver, and the Golden Triangle connect into a useful walking day. The River North Art District (RiNo), Highland, City Park, Cherry Creek, Washington Park, and South Broadway sit in different directions. RTD rail and buses cover important corridors, but the nearest stop, frequency, transfers, and late return need a day-specific check.

Bicycles and shared bikes can suit the Cherry Creek and South Platte paths when weather and comfort allow. Strong sun, snow, ice, afternoon storms, and event crowds all change a route that looked easy over breakfast.

Red Rocks and event nights

Confirm the return before leaving the hotel

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre is west of Denver near Morrison and is not served like a downtown arena. Compare the current event shuttle, personal car, parking, designated-driver, and rideshare arrangements before the show. Daytime park access and concert entry operate differently.

Coors Field and Ball Arena fit naturally with central rail and walking. Empower Field also has transit and pedestrian approaches, but event closures, security, and crowd routing can alter the final blocks. Follow venue and RTD notices for the specific event rather than relying on an ordinary weekday route.

Winter arrival

City sunshine does not clear the mountain road

Denver streets, foothills, and I-70 mountain passes can hold different conditions at the same hour. Check COtrip, airline notices, traction requirements, and the complete route before driving west.

Parking

Confirm overnight parking

Downtown and neighborhood garages add real cost, while street restrictions change by block, hour, event, and snow operation. Confirm hotel parking and never leave luggage visible in a parked vehicle.

Mountain extension

Keep it outside the city weekend

Boulder, Rocky Mountain National Park, ski towns, and high passes add weather, traffic, elevation, and substantial driving. Give Denver its own nights, then begin the regional road trip rested and in daylight.
